Have you ever wondered what kind of precise, clockwork-like manufacturing logic lies behind the unique flavor of essences and fragrances? When "batch consistency" becomes a matter of life and death, how can an ordinary production schedule possibly "diagnose" an entire factory? In the highly regulated and demanding industry of essences and fragrances, where does craftsmanship truly reside—on the honor wall or in that sheet of paper before every day's work begins? Let us follow the perspective of a manufacturing leader to re-understand what it means to "define precision with data" and what it means to "transparency is the best moat".

A person who watches the "clock" every day

In the essence and flavor industry, there is a role that is rarely seen by outsiders - the person in charge of production and manufacturing.

Peng Xingyu is just such a person. Before starting work every day, he does one thing without fail: open the daily production schedule. In his view, it is a comprehensive "factory physical examination" - delivery capacity, cost consumption, quality bottom line, compliance risk, all hidden inside.

From mines to essences and flavors: a choice to "move to the city" leads to the most demanding industry that emphasizes "consistency"

In 2012, Peng Xingyu graduated from a chemistry major and took his first job at a mine. The job was stable, but he always had a simple wish in his heart: to move to the city. By chance, he saw a job posting for a quality inspector and submitted his resume, entering the essence and flavor industry.

The standard he faced shifted from "more or less the same" to "must be exactly the same". The industry's obsession with "consistency" far exceeded his imagination. Essence and fragrance are the soulful ingredients of products. Customers have extremely low tolerance for batch-to-batch differences - the aroma components and physicochemical indicators of the first batch and the 100th batch must be highly consistent.

Only after entering this industry did he understand that craftsmanship is not just a slogan, but rather the ability to make every drop of essence grow uniformly.

First time serving as a director: Vision matters more than technical expertise.

His career has seen four job transitions. The most memorable experience was when he first took on the role of Director of the Manufacturing Center. He remarked, "My previous roles were closely tied to technical expertise, where I only needed to manage my own scope of work. As a director, however, I had to view things from a broader perspective for the first time: overseeing overall production internally, collaborating across departments externally, and ensuring full compliance with regulations."Though he is inherently conservative in nature, this role pushed him to grow significantly.

True craftsmanship lies in running the entire manufacturing chain with the precision of a sophisticated instrument. It was then that he began to develop what he would later repeatedly call "engineer's thinking": structured workflows, full traceability and closed-loop optimization.

Credentials count for little. What truly matters is the way you think.

Many people ask him, "Is your professional title of Tobacco Engineer highly authoritative?"

He corrects them earnestly: "It was not obtained through examinations, but via professional review. What truly makes a difference is not the certificate itself, but the structured thinking developed throughout the review process." This experience taught him to identify critical control points with professional expertise and express ideas in a systematic way.

He remarks, "When technical logic meets management demands, what creates real value is your inherent ability to break down problems, control variables and carry out closed-loop optimization."

What lies ahead in the next three years—and what will truly matter?

Peng Xingyu has a clear take on the next three years. Competition will no longer center on production capacity or formula confidentiality. Instead, it hinges on four core capabilities: batch consistency, full-chain digital traceability, eco-friendly low-carbon processes and flexible adaptability.

True craftsmanship amid stringent regulation: transparency serves as the strongest defense.

The flavor and fragrance industry operates under stringent regulation and heightened public scrutiny, which places distinctive constraints on the daily decision-making of the Manufacturing Division.

His decisions are not merely about speed and quality, but about striking a balance within the framework of compliance, auditability and traceable records. Any change must first be assessed against three criteria: Is it compliant? Is it auditable? Can we prove sustained control? When efficiency and traceability conflict, the latter always takes precedence.

What others see as restrictions, he regards as the most tangible embodiment of craftsmanship in this industry.

Two pieces of advice for everyone.

As a Tobacco Engineer, I’d say:"

First, fully master process standards, operating procedures and quality red lines, and ensure all outputs match the reference samples. Learn to evaluate equipment through data.Consistently producing qualified products is the baseline. Being able to analyze fluctuations and narrow them down via process optimization is where real progress begins."

As General Manager of the Division:

"Professional competence is essential, yet manufacturing ultimately answers for business performance. Before rolling out any improvement, ask yourself three questions: Will it boost delivery stability? How will it affect batch costs and operational efficiency? What compliance or supply chain risks may it bring? Those who can translate technical issues into business insights are always highly valued."

These two remarks reflect two sides of a true craftsman: one focuses intently on perfecting products, the other looks ahead to articulating value clearly.

Let’s circle back to the very beginning: the production schedule reviewed daily before work starts.

Peng Xingyu says it is no sophisticated management tool, but merely a habit. Behind this habit lies all the insights he has accumulated over more than a decade.

Craftsmanship is never embodied in honorary banners. Instead, it is reflected in the daily production schedules and the unwavering dedication behind them.
